Do college essays really have to be 500 words

Photo Credit: Getty. August is when my team and I spend the most time working with our seniors on their college essays. When it comes to top schools, playing it safe is the riskiest move of all. The goal of the college essay is to come across as a real human being, someone who is likable and has the mindset, values, and personality traits to succeed in college. Those mindsets and personality traits include a growth mindset, strong intellectual curiosity, empathy and friendliness and strong emotional intelligence.

Application Process

The mindsets and personality traits to avoid are a fixed mindset, an inflated ego, a patronizing or dismissive attitude, and low emotional intelligence. What, in your view, are significant aspects of your generation that we should be aware of? If you live outside of the U. It could be an idea, book, project, cultural activity, work of art, start-up, music, movie, research, innovation, question, or other pursuit. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably?

Please indicate up to three from the list provided. Why do these areas appeal to you? What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What question would you ask? Writing Center / College Essay Tips

If this sounds like you, then please share your story. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. The Coalition Application personal statement has the same prompts as last year.

Coalition Application schools may not require this personal statement essay or may have a different suggested or maximum word count requirement for it. The Apply Texas prompts are the same as last year. Schools may have changed the prompts that they accept. Apply Texas recommends keeping the essay between and words in length. Topic A: What was the environment in which you were raised? Describe your family, home, neighborhood, or community, and explain how it has shaped you as a person.

Topic B: Most students have an identity, an interest, or a talent that defines them in an essential way. Tell us about yourself. Topic C: You've got a ticket in your hand - Where will you go? What will you do? What will happen when you get there? The Universal Application has the same personal statement and activity description essay as last year.

Personal Statement: Please write an essay that demonstrates your ability to develop and communicate your thoughts. Some ideas include: a person you admire; a life-changing experience; or your viewpoint on a particular current event.
